Parametric design is a process based on algorithmic thinking that enables the expression of parameters and rules that, together, define, encode and clarify the relationship between design intent and design response. A parametric model is thus based on a set of dynamic relations, which continuously inform and influence each other. The result is no longer a clearly defined form, but rather a flexible connection of parameters of the geometrical shape and numerical variables of these parameters for the description of the desired variant. A cuboid for example can be defined by the variables length, width and height, a cylinder by radius and height.

Digital Crafting KISD

/

July 28th, 2014

/ Manuel Kretzer

In a 10 day workshop the students from KISD – Köln International School of Design have been encouraged to develop a design project based on a buttom-up design process – ‘material and process to form’ (instead of form first, material later) by experimenting with material properties and computer based processing techniques, such as 3D printing and CNC milling…

SleepBox

/

October 15th, 2011

/ Manuel Kretzer

SleepBox represents a contemporary furniture, designed for the demands of an increasingly urbanized environment. A human-scale object, which creates a space of comfort and relaxation within airports, offices or other semi public areas. The hard and uniform shell excludes the exterior and at the same time creates a soft and smooth interior. The project was designed by Caspar Lohner and supervised by Manuel Kretzer and Mathias Bernhard at the Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design, ETH Zürich and realized in collaboration with Kläusler Acrylstein AG.

Actuated Matter Workshop

/

September 7th, 2011

/ Manuel Kretzer

The Actuated Matter Workshop forms part of a recently started research initiative – a collaboration between the Zurich University of the Arts, Interaction Design (DDE), Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (DMU), and the ETH Zürich’s Chair for Computer Aided Architectural Design – that explores the application of smart materials in architecture with respect to their ability to transform architecture into an “Emotive Environment”, a space that relates to its inhabitants in an emotive and responsive way. The focus is placed on the capabilities and limitations of materials themselves in generating kinetic, visual and acoustic feedback.
